Observations and Anecdotal Information
Ravintsara essential oil comes from the Cinnamomum Camphora Tree, which is originally native to parts of East Asia and more specifically, China, but now grows all over the globe including part of Austrailia, the US and Madagascar. The Camphora tree was introduced to Madagascar in the mid-18th century, and has long become adapted to the different environment, resulting in a changing of its chemotype to include around 50% cineole. Which is why ravintsara is distilled in Madagascar.
Similarly, ravensare essential oil also comes from Madagascar and has often led to confusion between the two. Many people seem to think that these oils are one and the same, and they even call the oil “ravensara” in many cases, adding to the confusion. But that is not the case as these two essential oils are vastly different.
It is important to know that ravintsara is primarily a respiratory oil, great for treating common colds and the flu. However it is not a remarkable anti-viral like the ravensare is, and therefore should not be used as a treatment for shingles or herpes outbreaks.
Ravintsara is instead a treatment for insomnia, joint and muscle pain, and a useful deodorant. It is known to be used as a treatment for acne, since it’s good to apply on small cuts, scrapes, and wounds. And most of all, it makes a very fine oil for inhalation to treat coughs, colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
